Disruption: anything that messes with my routine. Today's economic downturn - a massive disruption. Many of us have felt the pain of being told, "Your job has been terminated." Or maybe you're a young person completing your schooling only to find out that the career opportunity you had worked so hard to prepare for no longer exists. Dreams and plans disrupted. Where do we turn?

I resolve ... to pray. Dear God, this time it's different. I admit that too often I've tried to go it alone. It hasn't worked. Please help me pray.

If time is the missing ingredient of your prayer life, you may want to try setting aside a specific time and place to get together with God each day in prayer.

Eight Tall Ships under full sail entering the Duluth, Minnesota were greeted by a fleet of pleasure craft and sailboats that looked tiny by comparison. Daniel prayed. As a young man facing death he prayed with his three friends and God revealed the king’s dream to him. On his way to becoming prime minister, he persisted in prayer, was thrown into a den of lions, watched God stop the mouths of the beasts, and saw God melt the heart of the king.

“It takes all kinds of people to make the world go round!” That’s one of my wife’s favorite expressions when we encounter a disagreeable person. Maybe you have similar thoughts about some of your neighbors or people you work with. Think of poor Moses.

We need somebody who we can trust enough to share our burdens. We, of course, can and should cast our burdens on Christ (1 Peter 5:7), but from personal experience I know that it is therapeutic to be able to share my deepest needs with another person who is also on this sometimes difficult journey in life.

God sent a rare auto-immune blood disease my way, called cold agglutinin. For the last 16 years the daily question I deal with is, how cold is it going to be in this place, or that place? This has greatly curtailed my ability to be involved in church work in recent years. I loved serving the Lord in church, but he had something different in mind.

Prayer is a popular topic, or so it seemed when two women’s magazines arrived at our home in December each featuring a cover article on prayer!
