In Need of Jesus

In Need of Jesus

Sat, Jan 07, 2012

Whenever I get an opportunity to travel my answer is always “yes” and my next questions are “where, when, how and why?” I would guess that most people think through travel opportunities in the opposite order, but for me travel to new places is about the most exciting thing I can imagine.

In the six years that we’ve been in Taiwan, we’ve formed many relationships. I want to share with you about two men who we are privileged to call our friends.

Grace Unfolded

Grace Unfolded

Thu, Sep 08, 2011

A trio of Geraghty women unfolded the idea of God’s grace in the cool June morning to a gathering at Tuscarora Inn. Like the layers of an onion, our reserve was peeled away, and our tears became more profuse as one by one they shared their stories. Stories of God making his presence known; his grace flowing through his people; his grace revealed in his Word; his sustaining grace through tragedy.

Memories Found

Memories Found

Thu, May 05, 2011

I began sifting through fascinating documents, for example, Grandpa's letters describing how he scoped out a mission territory. And then at the very bottom of the pile, I found it: a 24-page typed document that my grandpa had dictated shortly before his death in 1963.

Adopt a People

Adopt a People

Looking at the need for Christ in the world today, LBIM has focused on particular people groups where there is currently little or no witness of Christ and no existing church native to that culture. The goal is to establish such churches, and that they will then in turn seek to plant more churches in their own people group and eventually in other people groups.

Resourcing Youth Workers

Resourcing Youth Workers

Sat, Jan 08, 2011

by Joel Nordtvedt | Many of our church youth leaders are solo pastors or volunteers who do not necessarily have youth resources for their ministries. The Regional Pastors decided to find someone with a passion for youth ministry, knowledge of the youth ministry scene, and communication gifts.

Leaders for the Next Generation

Leaders for the Next Generation

For most of the Church of the Lutheran Brethren’s first 100 years, the Bible College of the Lutheran Brethren Schools drew post-high school students from across the United States. That tradition ended in the early 90s when the Bible College closed. Since then we have had no central place or method to pass on our core values to the next generation of leaders.

Watford City

Watford City

Thu, Sep 09, 2010

Once a quiet community in the far west of North Dakota, Watford City is undergoing some major changes with the oil boom in full swing. In this setting we decided to start a church. We began in the summer of 2009 under the leadership of Pastor Burton Bundy.

Zam-Zam's Dreams

Zam-Zam's Dreams

Tue, Feb 23, 2010

Zam-Zam grew up as a member of a local religion. In those days very few in their religion allowed their children to attend school. But Zam-Zam was given that opportunity. Members of a Bible distribution organization gave New Testaments to Zam-Zam and her classmates. Most of them threw theirs away, but she kept hers. It was years, though, before she opened it.

The Lord is My Healer and Sustainer!

The Lord is My Healer and Sustainer!

Mon, Nov 30, 2009

In the spring of 1988, doctors at Mayo Clinic diagnosed me with a rare and chronic autoimmune inflammation of the skeletal muscles and blood vessels called Polymyositis. I was then a pastor at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church in Minot, North Dakota. Receiving this diagnosis, I remember saying to God, "My life has been yours since I was a teenager. Whatever you choose to do in my life, it's OK with me." On the amazing journey since that day, I've learned so much about our awesome God. He's shown me he heals spiritually, emotionally, relationally, physically and financially.

Past-due Rent No Match for Grace

Past-due Rent No Match for Grace

Sun, Nov 01, 2009

With an economic crunch in full swing and our church populated mostly by young adults who have little money to spare, we were no longer able to afford college rental fees. Since November 2008 we’ve been meeting in homes, except for all-church gatherings that are still held at the college. Our big concern was that we still owed the college $15,000 in past-due rent. With no way to generate the funds we needed, all we could do was call on God for help.

It all started with a used car Well, not just any used car, but a particular used car that the Johnson's were looking for. When they found it, they got more than they realized-and just what God intended.

Our Mission is Christ

Our Mission is Christ

Wed, Aug 26, 2009

In my recent readings and musings on missions I came across an article titled Luther and Missions in the 16th Century by the Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz. Dr. Schulz reminds us of Luther's take on missions when he says, "All Christians are obliged to missionary witness. They live for the sake of their neighbors and assist them in witness and deed."

Maple Park

Maple Park

Mon, Aug 17, 2009

God moved in the hearts of the people at Maple Park. Not only did he put resources into the hands of our congregation, he moved them to offer them up to him. We have discovered anew that in the area of stewardship of all our resources, it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Seeing God's Solution

Seeing God's Solution

Fri, Aug 14, 2009

The community was changing. Everything from storefront windows, to smells of Chinese food in the air; this part of Brooklyn went through a drastic change. What do you do? A church that had thrived in its ministry to Norwegian immigrants was now desperate for a new vision.
